Columbus Day History

Columbus Day is October 13th, 2008!

On this day in 2008, many Americans will take the time to remember the man who is believed to have discovered the Americas. Columbus was an Italian navigator, colonizer, and explorer, who, with the help of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, set out in 1492 to find a western trade route to India. Although he did not find a western trade route on this trip, what he did find on that fall day on October 12th, 1492, changed the course of history forever.

Rodrigo de Triana is believed to be the first one of the sailors to spot land in the New World, in what is believed to be an island in the Bahamas. His discovery led to the rapid colonization of what we know today as the United States, the Caribbean, and Latin America, by many Europeans looking for a fresh start in life.

Many countries in the Americas celebrate Columbus Day. In the United States we celebrate Columbus Day on the second Monday of the month of October, but until 1971, Columbus Day was celebrated only on October 12th.
