The Annual Pardoning of the Thanksgiving Turkeys
Did you know that each Thanksgiving two lucky turkeys are Presidentially "Pardoned" by the President of the United States of America?
Though no one is really sure how the tradition was started, each year the President of the United States pardons a turkey before Thanksgiving at a White House ceremony. Some people claim that the tradition was started with President Truman pardoning a turkey in 1947, while others claim the tradition started with Abraham Lincoln pardoning his son Tad's pet turkey.
Wherever the tradition came from, what is certain is that each year, two lucky birds are presented to the President of the United States who officially issues them a Presidential "Pardon" in the Rose Garden of the White House. This allows the turkeys to live out a full life on a farm in Virginia, or since 2005, become honorary grand marshals for the Disneyland Thanksgiving Day Parade and live out their lives at a Disneyland ranch.
The White House runs a contest each year, allowing the general public the chance to name the Thanksgiving turkeys. Once a bank of names is selected, they set up polling to allow people to vote on the turkeys' names. The two names with the most votes win! Last year, President Bush pardoned "May" and "Flower". Visit the White House website to see the names of turkeys past, and see pictures of past pardons!
